Miravalles Volcano - 7/27/2010 Just north of Bagaces in Guanacaste Costa Rica
Here are the pics from our first tour on our honeymoon. The tour was with Costa Rica for Everyone, and their website is http://www.costaricaforeveryone.com. I can't recommend them enough. We paid a little extra to go alone, but you can also go with a group. For us, the small extra fee for a dedicated guide was well worth the money. This tour was to an inactive volcano called Miravalles. The volcano has a crater on the southeast side that is still somewhat geothermally active and you are able to walk through it.
The first part of the tour had us go to a place near the volcano to zipline through the rainforest. Then we had typical Costa Rican lunch (which was amazing!). After lunch, we drove to a spot where we were did a small horseback ride to another section of rainforest. Once there, we completed a brief walk through the forest to see a few waterfalls and the native flora and fauna. Finally, we arrived at the previously mentioned crater. There, we had a 15-minute sauna, then a hot mudbath, rinsed off, and then soaked in a hot spring. The sauna was heated by the volcano, the hot mud for the mudbath was heated and produced naturally by the volcano, and the hot spring was created also using the heat produced by the Miravalles Volcano. When we were done relaxing, we took a walk through the crater to really get a feel for the power of the mostly inactive volcano.
